Sea Freight vs Air Freight: Choosing the Right Shipping Mode
One of the first decisions in any export order is how the goods will travel. Sea freight is the backbone of global trade — it is by far the most economical option for bulk cargo such as rice, spices, tiles, textiles and dehydrated products. A 20ft or 40ft container keeps the per-kilogram freight cost low, and full-container-load (FCL) shipments give you control over packing and sealing. Transit from Indian ports to the Gulf takes about a week, to Europe two to four weeks, and to East Asia two to three weeks. Air freight costs more per kilogram but delivers in two to five days. It makes sense for fresh produce with short shelf life, urgent samples, high-value low-weight goods, or launching a product in a new market quickly. A practical rule: if the product value is high relative to its weight, or the shelf life is under two weeks, consider air. For everything else, sea freight in a well-packed container is usually the right answer. At AS EXIME we quote both options where relevant, so you can compare landed cost before deciding. Tell us your destination and timeline, and we will recommend the most economical workable route.
